The CSUMB Small Business Development Center opened its doors in Gonzales on November 30, 2009. Since then,  we have assisted small business owners in communities throughout eastern Monterey, western San Benito and southern Santa Clara Counties. Our goal is to promote the development and growth of effective and ethical small businesses that can excel in today's diverse, global economy.

 

The services of the CSUMB SBDC are made available to the community through your assistance and collaboration.  We thank you for your support!

Our business consultants have successfully assisted with business start-ups,  business loans, marketing  and business management.  Below is a summary of what we have accomplished in your community.

  

Monterey County (East of the Salinas River) 
 

Counseling Accomplishments

  • Provided 252 business owners with private individualized counseling for a total of 2,350 counseling service hours
  • Of the 252 clients, 20 were retail, 77 were service, 3 wholesale, 17 manufacturers, 20 construction and 115 other categories.
  • Provided counseling in the areas of:  start-up 37%,  business planning 15%, financing & loan acquisition 13%, accounting  & cash flow management 8%, marketing/sales 10%,  management 9%, human resources 2% and other 6%

Training Accomplishments

  • Offered a total of 45 small business workshops
  • Attended by 703 business owners
  • Training Topics presented include: business financing, business plan, cash flow management, marketing, pre-business planning, government contracting, and technology
  • Collaborated to Present Project 17 Asset Inventory Workshop
  • Coordinated regional seminars on commercialization & Intellectual Property Protection for Technology

Economic Impact

 

With the help of CSUMB SBDC Counseling

  • 16 new business start-ups
  • 79 jobs were created or retained locally
  • Provided 19 local business with capital acquisition assistance resulting in $1,455,080 in funding through SBA Guaranteed programs, municipal loan programs and equity financing

  

 

San Benito County (West San Benito County)
 

Counseling Accomplishments

  • Provided 50 business owners with private individualized counseling for a total of 503 counseling service hours
  • Of the 50 clients, 1 was retail, 11 were service, 2 wholesale, 1 manufacturer, 5 construction and 30 other categories.
  • Provided counseling in the areas of:  start-up 34%,  business planning 16%, financing & loan acquisition 15%, accounting  & cash flow management 11%, marketing/sales 9%,  management 4%, human resources 2% and other 9%

Training Accomplishments

  • Offered a total of 5 small business workshops
  • Attended by 56 business owners
  • Training Topics presented include: Lenders Panel, How to Start & Operate a Bed and Breakfast, Starting a Successful Business and a Spanish Financing your Farm workshop

Economic Impact

 

With the help of CSUMB SBDC Business Counseling

  • 2 new business start-ups
  • 6 jobs were created or retained locally
  • Provided 3 local business with capital acquisition assistance resulting in $575,000 in funding through SBA Guaranteed programs, municipal loan programs and equity financing
 

  

Santa Clara County (South of Bernal Road)
 

Counseling Accomplishments

  • Provided 42 business owners with private individualized counseling for a total of 370 counseling service hours
  • Of the 42 clients, 8 were retail, 11 were service, 2 manufacturers, 1 construction and 18 other categories.
  • Provided counseling in the areas of:  start-up 34%,  business planning 13%, financing & loan acquisition 10%, accounting  & cash flow management 7%, marketing/sales 14%,  management 11%, and other 11%

Training Accomplishments

  • Offered a total of 10 small business workshops
  • Attended by 116 business owners
  • Training Topics presented include: Business financials, business plan, customer service, time management, government contracting, launching a website,  and marketing for small business
 

Economic Impact

  • 2 new business start-ups
  • 7 jobs were created or retained locally
  • Provided 2 local business with capital acquisition assistance resulting in $950,000 in funding through SBA Guaranteed programs, municipal loan programs and equity financing
